Association Webinars: Sustainability and the Built Environment

The built environment in South Africa contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions, with building operations and embodied carbon from key materials playing substantial roles.

To address this, the Government has introduced two flagship initiatives: Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) for large buildings to monitor and improve energy efficiency, and the Integrated Renewable Energy and Resource Efficiency Programme (iREREP) to promote renewable energy and resource efficiency in government facilities. These initiatives aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 Mt and generate over 500,000 green jobs by 2050.

The objective of this webinar to is understand the response of the built environment to the challenge of climate change (in both mitigation and adaptation), and explore how climate smart architecture can be a lever to contribute both to the ecological sustainability and the socio-economic imperatives (employment opportunities, etc.).
