Association Webinars: Modeling social factors in onshore wind energy expansion

Energy models are used to inform and support decisions within the transition to climate neutrality. In recent years, such models have been criticized for being overly techno-centered and ignoring environmental and social factors of the energy transition. This issue may be particularly relevant for the expansion of onshore wind energy, which is found to be cost-effective in many energy models while facing social opposition in the real world.

This webinar will bring together three recent efforts on integrating social factors in energy models:

The webinar will feature short presentations from these three projects and a joint discussion of lessons learnt from the perspective of modelers and decision-makers, moderated by Cristina Madrid-López.

Moderator:

Cristina Madrid-López (PhD Environmental Science) is director of the lab “Environmental assessment for the energy transition”, a research line of the SosteniPra research group at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain. Her research focusses on the integration of sustainability assessment, computing and citizen science and seeks to understand how and if new technologies and policies will help us reach the targets of the energy transition. To that end, her lab is working on the development of the ENBIOS tool, an open-source python package that assesses the sustainability of energy system pathways.

Speakers:

Diana Süsser is a senior expert on Energy Policies and Transition Aspects at the Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy (IEECP). Her research focuses on how to better integrate social and political aspects into energy models and how to enable just transitions. Diana is the co-developer of the QTDIAN social modeling toolbox. She received her PhD in Geography from the University of Hamburg on renewable-energy communities. She has worked for various research institutes and non-governmental organizations in close collaboration with policymakers and companies. She is currently coordinating the Life project JUSTEM and working on other EU projects.

Oliver Ruhnau is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Hertie School in Berlin. His research interests lie in the field of energy economics and the sustainable transition of energy systems. In his dissertation, he investigated flexible electricity demand in current and future electricity markets, with a focus on heat pumps and hydrogen electrolysis. He is co-developer of the open-source electricity market model EMMA and applies statistical methods for causal inference. Previously, he worked as a data scientist in the energy industry and studied engineering and economics at the RWTH Aachen University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Jann Weinand is head of the research group “Complex Energy System Models and Data Structures” at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3) at the Research Facility Jülich, Germany. His research focuses on the techno-economic and socially acceptable system integration of renewable energies in municipal and (inter-)national energy systems. He holds a PhD in energy economics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and a M.Sc. in industrial engineering with specialization in mechanical engineering (energy technology) from RWTH Aachen University.
