Recently, the environmental impacts of digital currencies, the most common of which is Bitcoin, attracted attention. The topic of this webinar will be a scientific analysis of the carbon footprint of Bitcoin mining via life cycle assessment methodology, followed by a discussion on what the decision-makers and market stakeholders can do to mitigate these impacts.

Speakers:

Cem Avci is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Boğaziçi University. He is presently heading the Energy Policy Research Center at the University. Prof. Avci graduated from the Civil Engineering Department at Bogazici University and subsequently received his Masters and Ph.D at Princeton and Purdue University, respectively. He has been a faculty member at Bogazici University since 1990.

His research interests are in the fields of Sustainability in Infrastructure Projects, Environmental and Social Impact assessments, Soil and Ground Water Quality Investigations and Remediation projects as well as Waste Management Studies. In particular: Environmental and Social Impact Assessments Research: Hydroelectric Power Plants, Wind farms, Gas Fired Combined Cycle Gas Power Plants, coal and mineral mines), infrastructure (motorways, tunnels and bridges, health campuses, container terminals, airports) and oil and gas (refineries, oil and gas (shale gas, large scale pipelines. Research includes impact evaluation, methodology, risk ranking, mitigation measures and monitoring. Turkish and International guidelines.

Fehmi Görkem Üçtüğ after graduating from Middle East Technical University – Chemical Engineering Department with a GPA of 3.85/4.00- with the First in Class award in 2004, carried out his Ph.D. studies at the University of Manchester, School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Sciences between 2004 and 2008. His studies were funded by the Marie Curie Fellowship of the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union. His thesis title was “Synthesis and Characterisation of Polyvinylalcohol-Mordenite Membranes and Their Applications in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells”. After returning to Turkey, he completed his compulsory military service and then started working at Bahçesehir University – Energy Systems Engineering Department in 2010. He worked there as an assistant professor until September 2016 and taught courses such as “Fundamentals of Thermodynamics”, “Heat and Mass Transfer”, “Fuels and Combustion”, “Energy Economics”, “Sustainable Energy”, “Fuel Cell Technologies”, “Introduction to Energy Systems Engineering”, “Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems”, “Capstone Project”. He also worked as the vice-dean as the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences between 2013 and 2016. Then, he joined the Sustainable Industrial Systems research group within the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Sciences of the University of Manchester as a visiting professor in Fall 2016. Since February 2017, he has been working as a full time academic at Izmir University of Economics, where he has taught courses like "General Chemistry", "Physics I for Engineers", "Differential Equations I", "Material and Energy Balances", and "Natural Resource Management", “Engineering Thermodynamics”, and “Food Process Design”. He has also been appointed as the Vice-Dean of Faculty of Engineering in August 2017. His main research interests are life cycle assessment, clean energy, energy economics and sustainability, and fuel cells. He received the title of associate professorship from ÜAK on the 17th of July, 2018. He is also the vice-president of Turkish Association for Energy Economics.
