Association Webinars: LATAM hunting for the next milestone in the renewable energy transformation

Part 1: A New Chilean Clean Technologies Institute

Latin America stands out for its vast natural resources and is one of the regions with the most significant potential to build a CO2 neutral economy by 2050.

Chile, a leading regional country, is committed to democracy and freedom, is one of the founding members of the Pacific Alliance, and has a strong agenda for a renewable transformation in the energy and transportation sector. At COP25 Chile, with other regional countries, agreed to achieve a regional average of 70% renewables in 2030 in electricity generation from the 55% that it is today.

In one decade, Chile has profoundly transformed its electricity mix, leveraging its vast renewable energy sources and is committed to carbon neutrality in 2050. And today, it has been credited as the most attractive emerging market for clean energy investment.

The north of the country is an area where most of its vast mining activity takes places, a global hub where world class mining companies have operations for the extraction of copper, lithium, molybdenum, silver, zinc, iron, and many others. The region is characterized by a desert and high solar radiation, the highest on earth, and has also become a leading hub for the deployment of renewable energy, particularly solar.

The country is eager to scale in the value chain from its natural resources’ exports, such as copper and lithium, and sees that without innovation, that's not possible. The challenge is that country only invests 0.34% of its GDP in R&D, among the lowest within OECD.

Late in 2018, Corfo, the Chilean state production development agency, launched an international bid for the creation, in the north of the country, of a non-for-profit Clean Technology Institute to spur innovation in the mining and renewable energy sector. Early January of this year, this initiative was awarded to AUI (Associate Universities, Inc. -www.aui.edu-). The Institute's, with an initial budget of US$ 240M, main aim is to take advantage of the vast natural and mining resources that exist in the north of the country, increasing its value added while reducing CO2 emissions, by advancing technologies for sustainable mining, solar energy, advance materials, and green hydrogen, as well as contribute to workforce development, entrepreneurship and innovation, and to support the country on public policy within the areas of the Institute.

In this webinar, the leading team of the winning proposal will present the new Chilean Clean Technologies Institute: its main objectives, its expected positive regional, on the country and international impact, contributions to reduce CO2 emissions with new technologies, a more sustainable mining industry, and taking advantage of the vast lithium and solar resources that exist in the country.

Chile looks ahead for the opportunity to become exporters of renewable energy products, such as green hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels, benefitting from new markets and industries, and unleashing novel pillars for economic development and job creation while supporting other countries to meet their N.D.C. ambitions.
