BIEEBIEE's aim is to encourage the study of energy economics and policy by bringing together individuals with a wide range of expertise in the energy community and encouraging the exchange of ideas and information. Fees paid by members support a programme of meetings and publications which further the BIEE's aims. BIEE represents the interests of the IAEE (qv) in the UK.

BIEE was established in its present form in 1980 and it was formally launched by the Secretary of State for Energy in 1981, becoming an independent company in 1984 and a registered charity in 1985.

Membership is open to all with an interest in energy economics and policy, whether their professional activity be in business, academia or government, including those in full time education. BIEE's members are found in the following professions and occupations: Accountancy, Government Departments, Banking, Independent Consultants, Chemical Industry, International Agencies, City of London Institutes, Manufacturing and, Coal Companies, Construction Sector, Conservation & Nuclear Industry, Efficiency Specialists, Oil Corporations, Economics Institutes, Regulatory Bodies, Electricity Companies, Research Students, Embassy Attaches, Technical Institutes, Environmental Agencies, Trade Associations, Financial Houses, Transport Industries, Gas Companies and Universities.

Individual fees include all services offered by the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) established in 1977 with similar aims. All members receive The quarterly magazine "The Energy Journal", The quarterly "IAEE Newsletter", The annual Membership Directory of IAEE with 3000 personal members and contact details worldwide (each member is entitled to his or her own free entry in its pages,) and the BIEE Newsletters and Meeting Advices.
